Chun's enope squid

Chun's Enope Squid (Enoploteuthis chunii) is a small mesopelagic cephalopod mollusc in the family Enoploteuthidae, named for the German zoologist Carl Chun, who led the German Deep Sea Expedition (Valdivia Expedition) of 1898–1899 and produced foundational work on deep-sea organisms. The genus Enoploteuthis comprises small, hook-bearing squids inhabiting oceanic mesopelagic and bathypelagic zones in tropical and subtropical seas, including the Indo-Pacific. Like other enoploteuthid squids, E. chunii bears rows of hooks along the tentacle clubs, which serve in prey capture, replacing the suckers present in other squid families. These squids are active, fast-swimming predators of small fish, crustaceans, and other mesopelagic invertebrates, and they are in turn important prey for larger pelagic fish and toothed whales. The species is assessed as Data Deficient by the IUCN, reflecting limited information on population size, distribution, and ecology. It has been recorded from Taiwanese waters and appears to range broadly in the Indo-Pacific mesopelagic zone. The deep-sea habitat of enoploteuthid squids makes direct observation and monitoring exceptionally challenging.
