Chrysostephanosphaera globulifera is a colonial green alga in the family Chlorococcaceae or related lineage, characterized by its distinctive spherical colonial organization. The genus name combines references to golden (chryso) ornamentation and a spherical (sphaera) colony, with the epithet globulifera indicating the production of globular cells or structures within the colony. The species is found in freshwater habitats, with records from Scandinavian lakes including Sweden and Norway. Chrysostephanosphaera species are planktonic chlorophytes, photosynthesizing in the photic zone of oligotrophic and mesotrophic freshwaters. Green algae of this type contribute to primary production and serve as prey for zooplankton including Cladocera and rotifers. The colonial habit may provide protection against small protozoan grazers, while remaining accessible to larger filter feeders. C. globulifera has not been formally assessed for conservation status by the IUCN and is classified as Not Evaluated.
