Chamonixia caespitosa is a hypogeous, truffle-like basidiomycete growing in clusters below the soil surface in alpine and subalpine habitats. It inhabits high-altitude mountain forests of Europe, particularly in association with spruce and alpine plant communities. This underground fungus forms ectomycorrhizal relationships with alpine tree species and disperses spores through small burrowing mammals.
