Halorussus rarus is a halophilic archaeon in the family Halobacteriaceae, isolated from saline lake sediments in China. It is Gram-stain-negative by the standard test, pleomorphic, and requires high sodium chloride concentrations for optimal growth. Its genus, established in 2008, represents one of many specialist lineages adapted to hypersaline terrestrial environments.

Halorussus ruber is an extremely halophilic archaeon in the family Halobacteriaceae, isolated from saline environments in China. Its red pigmentation is due to bacterioruberin carotenoids, typical of many extreme halophiles.
