<em>Dentiraja australis</em>, commonly known as the Common Skate, is a cartilaginous fish belonging to the family Rajidae within the order Rajiformes. It is currently assessed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List, indicating that populations face increasing pressure that could qualify the species for a threatened category in the near future if current trends continue. Like other skates, <em>Dentiraja australis</em> is a bottom-dwelling elasmobranch that typically inhabits soft sediment seafloors, where it lies partially buried and ambushes benthic prey. Skates in the Dentiraja genus are generally found in coastal and shelf waters of the southern hemisphere, particularly around Australian waters. They typically feed on a variety of bottom-dwelling invertebrates and small fish, using their flattened body shape and pectoral fins to maneuver close to the seafloor.
