Lorica morphology is the primary criterion for species identification in Chrysococcus, with different taxa having characteristic shapes including spherical, heart-shaped, flask-shaped, and various elaborated forms with spines, pores, or processes. C. furcatus has been recorded from Norwegian and Swedish freshwater environments, contributing to the well-documented chrysophyte diversity of Scandinavian lakes and freshwater bodies.
