Habitat

Chroococcus pallidus is a species of cyanobacteria in the family Chroococcaceae, distinguished by its relatively pale coloration, as suggested by the specific epithet. Many Chroococcus species are intensely pigmented with blue-green phycocyanin and chlorophyll, but Chroococcus pallidus is characterized by cells with a more subdued, pale olive to bluish tint, possibly reflecting differences in pigment concentration or composition. The species occurs in freshwater habitats including lakes, streams, and moist substrates. Like other Chroococcus species, it consists of spherical cells that divide by binary fission and remain grouped within layered mucilaginous sheaths. These gelatinous structures protect the cells from desiccation and may play a role in regulating buoyancy and light exposure. Chroococcus pallidus has been recorded from northern European freshwater localities. Cyanobacteria of the Chroococcaceae contribute to the microbial diversity of freshwater ecosystems and are important components of biofilms and periphyton communities on submerged surfaces. The species has not received formal IUCN assessment, consistent with the general treatment of prokaryotic microorganisms in global conservation frameworks.
