Common Tree-chernes

<em>Chernes cimicoides</em>, known as the common tree chernes, is a pseudoscorpion in the family Chernetidae within the order Pseudoscorpiones. This small arachnid is widely distributed across Europe and parts of western Asia, occurring in countries including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Sweden, and Russia. <em>Chernes cimicoides</em> typically inhabits loose bark on deciduous trees, particularly old oaks, beeches, and other veteran trees, where it lives beneath bark scales and in crevices. It is commonly associated with xylophagous beetles, particularly those in the family Cerambycidae and Scolytidae, whose galleries and frass provide microhabitat and prey resources. Pseudoscorpions of this species are predatory, feeding on small mites, springtails, and other tiny invertebrates using their powerful chelae (pincers). A notable behavior is phoresy, whereby <em>Chernes cimicoides</em> attaches to larger insects to disperse between suitable habitat patches. The species is currently assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, although its dependence on mature and veteran trees makes it sensitive to woodland management practices that remove old-growth timber. Biological traits such as average lifespan, body length, and weight are consistent with pseudoscorpion norms but remain poorly documented at the species level in the scientific literature.
