The clover aphid (Nearctaphis bakeri) is a species of plant-feeding hemipteran insect in the family Aphididae, order Hemiptera, native to North America and now established across much of Europe. Like other aphids, N. bakeri has a complex life cycle involving alternation between sexual and parthenogenetic reproduction, with winged and wingless morphs enabling both dispersal and dense colony formation. The species is a specialized herbivore feeding primarily on clovers (Trifolium species) and occasionally other leguminous plants, inserting its stylet mouthparts into phloem tissue to extract sugar-rich sap. Infestations reduce plant vigor, cause leaf curling and yellowing, and large colonies can significantly impair clover yield in agricultural settings. N. bakeri also potentially vectors plant viruses, as is common among aphid species with phloem-feeding habits. The species is found across Europe including Belgium, Denmark, and Norway, and is widespread across North America including Canada and the United States. It inhabits meadows, agricultural fields, grasslands, and pastures where clovers are abundant, appearing throughout the spring and summer growing season. Natural enemies including ladybird beetles, parasitoid wasps, lacewings, and hoverfly larvae help regulate aphid population densities in diverse habitats. N. bakeri is classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, reflecting its wide distribution and absence of significant population decline. Management in agricultural contexts primarily focuses on biological control and judicious pesticide application to protect beneficial pollinators.
