Habita solos calcarios em florestas europeias temperadas, formando associacoes ectomicorrizicas com carvalhos, aveleiras e outras arvores de madeira dura. Este fungo subterraneo forma parcerias de troca de nutrientes com raizes de arvores e dispersa esporos por meio de animais escavadores atraidos pelo seu aroma pungente.
