Um pequeno papa-capim de cor castanho-avermelhada de pastagens abertas, campos cobertos de ervas daninhas e brejos distribuido pela America Central e pela maior parte da America do Sul a leste dos Andes ate a Argentina, o papa-capim-de-peito-ruivo apresenta plumagem rufosa-vermelha quente nos machos com asas mais escuras. Entre os Sporophila mais amplamente distribuidos, prosperam em paisagens agricolas perturbadas e vegetacao secundaria. Forrageiam em bandos pequenos a grandes em sementes de gramineas e culturas de cereais. Pouco Preocupante, com populacoes beneficiadas pela expansao agricola.
