É um organismo mixotrófico capaz de sequestrar cloroplastos de suas presas ciliadas por meio de um processo chamado cleptoplastia. Algumas espécies de Dinophysis produzem ácido ocadaico e outras toxinas lipofílicas associadas ao envenenamento diarreico por frutos do mar.
