About

Funaria hygrometrica, commonly known as common cord moss or bonfire moss, is a cosmopolitan moss in the family Funariaceae. It is distributed across Asia, Europe, North America, and South America, and is especially well known for its tendency to colonize disturbed and nutrient-rich substrates such as burnt ground, roadsides, garden beds, and the sites of former campfires. The species is an early successional pioneer, often among the first plants to establish on bare mineral soil following disturbance. Funaria hygrometrica produces distinctive capsules on long, twisted setae that coil hygroscopically in response to changes in humidity, aiding spore dispersal. Its sporophytes are highly recognizable, with a pear-shaped capsule that is initially green and turns brown at maturity. Biological traits of this species remain poorly documented in the scientific literature.
