About

<em>Leptinotarsa decemlineata</em>, the Colorado beetle or Colorado potato beetle, is one of the most economically significant agricultural pest insects in the world, belonging to the family Chrysomelidae. Native to North America, this species has spread extensively across Europe and Asia through accidental introduction, and is now established in 37 European countries as well as multiple Asian nations. The Colorado beetle has not been evaluated by the IUCN. Adults and larvae feed voraciously on the foliage of potato (<em>Solanum tuberosum</em>) and related Solanaceae, and populations can completely defoliate crops if uncontrolled. The species is notorious for rapidly evolving resistance to insecticides, having developed resistance to over 50 different chemical compounds across various populations. Adults are characterised by distinctive yellow and black longitudinal striping on the elytra. The beetle overwinters as an adult in the soil and emerges in spring to feed and reproduce. Regulatory controls restrict its introduction into uninfested regions, and it remains a quarantine pest in several countries. Biological traits of this species remain poorly documented in the scientific literature.
