Habita oceanos temperados e subpolares. É um componente importante do fitoplâncton oceânico, participando ativamente da produção primária e dos ciclos biogeoquímicos marinhos. Como todas as diatomáceas, possui parede celular silicificada chamada frústula, que persiste nos sedimentos oceânicos.
