Uma das espécies de araras mais vistosas e amplamente mantidas em cativeiro, as araras-canindé exibem um brilhante azul-cobalto nas partes superiores contrastando com um vivo amarelo nas partes inferiores e testa verde. Habitam florestas, capoeiras e savanas do leste do Panamá pelo Venezuela, Brasil e Bolívia até o Peru e Equador. Extremamente inteligentes, vivem em casais ou pequenos bandos, alimentando-se de nozes de palmeira, sementes e frutos. Populares em avicultura há mais de 400 anos, podem viver mais de 80 anos em cativeiro.
