É planctônica em lagos e lagoas, contribuindo para a entrada de nitrogênio em sistemas de água doce oligotróficos a mesotróficos. Nomeada em homenagem ao limnologista Edward Asahel Birge, é encontrada em lagos temperados do hemisfério norte.
