Um beija-flor pequeno e brilhantemente colorido das florestas nebulosas andinas e paramos, desde a Venezuela ate a Bolivia, os metaliuras tirios possuem babadores purpura-magenta profundo e caudas vermelho-purpura metalico. Habitam elevacoes de 2.500 a 4.500 metros, pairando em arbustos e ervas floridas do paramo. Os machos defendem territorios em torno de manchas de flores ricas em nectar. Entre os beija-flores de maior altitude, estao fisiologicamente adaptados ao ar frio e rarefeito dos altos Andes.
