Tolypothrix lanata e uma cianobacteria filamentosa e heterocistosa da familia Microchaetaceae, que forma tapetes entrelaçados ou lanosos em solos umidos e rochas. Pode fixar nitrogenio atmosferico por meio de celulas especializadas chamadas heterocistos.

Tolypothrix rivularis e uma cianobacteria filamentosa portadora de heterocistos encontrada em riachos, rios e charcos de agua doce, frequentemente aderida a rochas e plantas aquaticas em habitats de aguas correntes. Pode fixar nitrogenio atmosferico por meio de heterocistos e forma filamentos de ramificacao falsa caracteristicos do genero. Esta especie contribui para o ciclo de nutrientes em ecossistemas de agua doce loticos de zonas temperadas.
