Stephanoeca kentii e um coanoflagelado loricado, um organismo unicelular marinho que constroi uma delicada estrutura em forma de cesta (lorica) de tiras silicosas ao redor de sua celula. Habita aguas costeiras e oceanicas, onde se alimenta de bacterias picoplanctonicas. Coanoflagelados como esta especie sao de interesse cientifico por serem os parentes unicelulares vivos mais proximos dos animais.
