Sphingopyxis alaskensis é uma bactéria Gram-negativa marinha originalmente isolada de águas costeiras frias do Alasca, refletindo sua origem geográfica. Habita ambientes oceânicos frios e oligotróficos e pode crescer em concentrações muito baixas de nutrientes. Esta ultramicrobactéria está adaptada a condições marinhas frias e pobres em nutrientes, decompondo matéria orgânica dissolvida.
