Ocorre no sul e sudeste da Asia, do Nepal e India ao Vietna e Indonesia. Habita florestas, manguezais e areas cultivadas, frequentemente se agregando em grandes bandos em arvores frutiferas e cultivos de cereais. Sua area de distribuicao e uma das mais fragmentadas entre os periquitos do genero Psittacula. E amplamente mantida em avicultura na Asia e Europa.
