Populations are also found in montane and highland environments at higher elevations.

Micarea lignaria e um liquen crustoso pequeno com talo granular e apotecios minusculos verde-acinzentados, adaptado a substratos de madeira e casca. Cresce sobre casca acida nua, madeira e as vezes turfa em ambientes de floresta temperada e boreal. Este liquen fotosintetico obtem energia por meio de seu parceiro algal e contribui para a colonizacao de superficies de madeira.
