Habita pastagens abertas de paramo e arbustais em elevacoes andinas muito altas, de 3.200 a 4.500 metros na Colombia, Venezuela, Equador e Peru. Entre os beija-flores de maior altitude, forrageiam em flores de baixo crescimento do paramo e estao adaptados a temperaturas sub-zero noturnas por meio de torpor.
