Caçadora paciente e solitária, permanece imóvel por longos períodos antes de golpear peixes, rãs e pequenos mamíferos com rápidas dentadas do seu bico em forma de adaga. Nidifica colonialmente em árvores altas em colónias denominadas garçais, por vezes partilhadas com outras aves aquáticas coloniais. Amplamente distribuída e Pouco Preocupante a nível global.
