Habitat & Geographic Range

Found across multiple habitat types including tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests, tropical and subtropical grasslands and savannas, and flooded grasslands and savannas, among 4 distinct biome types within the Afrotropic biogeographic realm. Populations are also found in montane and highland environments at higher elevations.
Distributed across Cameroon, Congo (Republic), Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon. Currently classified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List, this species faces significant conservation challenges across its range.

O maior primata do mundo, os gorilas ocidentais pesam até 180 kg e habitam as florestas tropicais e subtropicais da África equatorial. Principalmente herbívoros, vivem em grupos familiares liderados por um macho dominante (silverback) que protege o bando e medeia conflitos sociais. Criticamente Em Perigo, com populações ameaçadas pelo desmatamento, caça ilegal para carne de caça e surtos de doença pelo vírus Ebola.
Nitrosarchaeum limnae e um arqueo oxidador de amonia de agua doce do filo Thaumarchaeota, isolado dos sedimentos do lago Constanca. E quimiolitoautotrofo, obtendo energia da oxidacao da amonia a nitrito e contribuindo significativamente para o ciclo do nitrogenio em ecossistemas de agua doce. A sua descoberta destacou que os oxidadores de amonia taumarcaicos nao se restringem a ambientes marinhos.
