Encontrado nas florestas nubladas andinas da Colômbia e Venezuela, habita florestas montanas úmidas entre 1.400 e 2.800 metros de altitude. Os machos realizam voos elaborados para atrair as fêmeas. Suas caudas extravagantes são um exemplo clássico de seleção sexual por preferência feminina.
