Desulfurococcus mucosus é uma archaea hipertermofílica da família Desulfurococcaceae, que prospera em ambientes quentes e anaeróbicos como fontes termais e fontes hidrotermais a temperaturas acima de 80 °C. É um anaeróbio obrigatório que reduz enxofre como aceptor de elétrons durante o metabolismo.
