The species is native to coastal mangrove forests and mudflats in Australia and Papua New Guinea, where it grows along the landward margins of mangrove ecosystems, often in areas subject to higher salinity and less frequent tidal inundation than more seaward mangrove species. The elongated, club-like fruits are distinctive features of this species, floating on water and dispersing via tidal currents.
