Chroococcus distans é uma cianobactéria unicelular pertencente à família Chroococcaceae. Caracteriza-se por células esféricas envoltas em bainhas mucilaginosas, que frequentemente formam colônias de duas ou quatro células. Habita ambientes aquáticos dulcícolas, solos úmidos e superfícies rochosas em todo o mundo. Como todas as cianobactérias, realiza fotossíntese oxigênica e algumas espécies podem fixar nitrogênio atmosférico. Pode contribuir para a formação de biofilmes em superfícies aquáticas.
