Imperial pigeons in this group are often characterized by pale gray and iridescent plumage. The Christmas Island imperial pigeon inhabits the dense tropical rainforest that covers much of the island's interior plateau. Conservation threats include habitat loss from past phosphate mining operations and the ongoing impacts of invasive species, particularly the yellow crazy ant, which has dramatically altered forest ecology through the farming of scale insects, leading to canopy dieback over large areas.
