E um protista fotossintetico encontrado em aguas marinhas e estuarinas, contribuindo para as comunidades de fitoplancton costeiro. Nomeado em homenagem ao oceanografo Alfred Redfield, pode formar densas floraciones em condicoes eutroficas.
