O macho na plumagem nupcial exibe cabeça, pescoço e peito castanho-avermelhados vivos, com ventre amarelo. Frequenta florestas abertas, clareiras e bordas de florestas durante a migração. Alimenta-se principalmente de sementes e insetos. Considerado localmente abundante em sua área de invernada, especialmente na China meridional.
