Caracteriza-se pelo peito e flancos castanho-avermelhados contrastantes com a garganta branca finamente barrada de preto. Habita sub-bosque de florestas tropicais úmidas das terras baixas e florestas de galeria na América do Sul. Como outros carriças, possui canto melodioso e complexo. Constrói ninhos fechados em vegetação densa. Alimenta-se de insetos e aracnídeos.
