A garça-real (Ardea cinerea) é uma grande e elegante ave pernalta que atinge até 1 metro de altura. Habita zonas húmidas, rios, lagos e zonas costeiras da Europa, Ásia e África. Caçadora paciente e solitária, permanece imóvel por longos períodos antes de golpear peixes, rãs e pequenos mamíferos com rápidas dentadas do seu bico em forma de adaga.
