Calothrix parasitica é uma cianobactéria heterocrística da família Rivulariaceae, caracterizada por filamentos cônicos com um heterocisto basal para fixação de nitrogênio. Cresce epifiticamente sobre outras algas, macrófitas ou em biofilmes sobre substratos rochosos em ambientes de água doce e marinhos. O gênero Calothrix está amplamente distribuído em habitats aquáticos e terrestres onde desempenha um papel na entrada de nitrogênio nos ecossistemas.
