Donzela de tamanho médio de habitats de água doce parada e de fluxo lento por toda a Europa e oeste da Ásia, o Platycnemis pennipes recebe seu nome pela conspícua franja plumosa nas tíbias posteriores dos machos, exibida durante cortejos. Os machos apresentam coloração azul-pálida, enquanto as fêmeas são verde-oliva. Pousam na vegetação emergente e são bons indicadores da qualidade da água em habitats ribeirinhos. As populações têm declinado localmente devido à poluição hídrica e à intensificação agrícola.
