Donzela de tamanho médio de habitats de água doce parada e de fluxo lento por toda a Europa e oeste da Ásia, o Platycnemis pennipes recebe seu nome pela conspícua franja plumosa nas tíbias posteriores dos machos, exibida durante cortejos.
