Um grande e marcante beija-flor de florestas tropicais do sul do México à Argentina, os manga-de-garganta-preta apresentam marcado dimorfismo sexual — os machos exibem garganta e peito negro brilhante com flancos violáceos e verdes e uma cauda roxa destacada, enquanto as fêmeas são brancas na parte inferior com uma faixa preta central. Habitam bordas de floresta, clareiras e jardins, defendendo agressivamente árvores em floração. Os machos realizam espetaculares voos de exibição na altura do dossel da floresta. Classificado como Pouco Preocupante em toda a sua ampla área de distribuição neotropical.
