Um pequeno coleiro com plumagem marcante preto-e-branca nos machos — partes superiores e asas preto-jet contrastando com partes inferiores brancas — os coleiros-preto-e-branco (Sporophila luctuosa) habitam habitats abertos e semiabertos incluindo campos, bordas de floresta e plantações sombreadas nos Andes, da Colômbia à Bolívia. Um dos Sporophila com padrão mais distinto. As fêmeas são pardas e bege simples. Alimentam-se de sementes de gramíneas e são às vezes mantidos como aves de gaiola pelo padrão e canto dos machos.
