Cortinarius subbalaustinus é um cogumelo teia de tamanho médio com coloração castanho-enferrujado e um véu cortina característico do grande género Cortinarius. Cresce em florestas caducifólias e mistas formando associações ectomicorrízicas com carvalho e árvores de madeira dura relacionadas na Europa temperada. Este fungo troca nutrientes com as raízes das árvores e produz corpos frutíferos no outono.
