Found across multiple habitat types including tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests, tropical and subtropical dry broadleaf forests, and tropical and subtropical grasslands and savannas, among 9 distinct biome types spanning the Australasia and Indomalayan and Palearctic realms. Populations are also found in montane and highland environments at higher elevations.

Symphytocarpus amaurochaetoides e um mixomiceto que produz esporangios escuros e agrupados em madeira em decomposicao e detritos vegetais em ambientes florestais. Pertence a um grupo de organismos que alternam entre um plasmodio movel e nutricional e um estagio reprodutivo esporangial. Como outros mixomicetos, contribui para a ecologia microbiana alimentando-se de bacterias e detritos em habitats florestais.
