O flamingo-americano é a espécie de flamingo com a plumagem mais vivamente colorida, exibindo um brilhante tom escarlate-rosado proveniente dos pigmentos carotenoides presentes em sua dieta de crustáceos. Ocorre em lagoas costeiras do Caribe, salinas e manguezais, desde as Bahamas e Flórida até a América Central e as Ilhas Galápagos.
