Sphingobacterium yamdrokense é um bastonete Gram-negativo pigmentado de amarelo, descrito pela primeira vez do Lago Yamdrok no Tibete, China. Habita sedimentos lacustres de alta altitude e ambientes frios e alcalinos de lagos do Planalto Tibetano. Este quimio-heterótrofo aeróbio está adaptado às condições extremas dos lagos salinos de alta altitude.
