E originaria da America do Sul, da Bolivia e do Brasil ate a Argentina, e foi introduzida no Hawaii e em outras ilhas do Pacifico, tornando-se uma ave iconica dos jardins de Honolulu. Habita arbustos densos, bordas de campos e jardins suburbanos, alimentando-se de sementes e pequenos insetos. Apesar do nome e da semelhanca superficial, nao e parente proximo dos cardeais norte-americanos, pertencendo a familia dos tangaras.
