안데스 벌새 중 단순하거나 무지개빛 깃털이 주를 이루는 것과 달리 반점 또는 얼룩무늬 아랫면을 가진 중형 벌새로, 콜롬비아와 베네수엘라에서 볼리비아 남쪽까지 해발 900-3,000미터의 안데스 운무림과 숲 가장자리에 서식한다. 반점 무늬 아랫면 패턴은 새가 이끼 덮인 나무껍질에 앉을 때 탁월한 위장 효과를 제공한다. 꿀과 소형 절지동물을 채집하며 안데스 착생식물의 중요한 수분 매개자 역할을 한다.
