콜롬비아와 에콰도르의 습윤한 안데스 숲에 서식하는 대형 벌새인 여황벌새(Heliodoxa imperatrix)는 수컷이 이리데센트 녹색과 보라색 깃털, 목과 가슴 전반에 걸쳐 반짝이는 비늘을 가진 가장 눈에 띄는 벌새 중 하나입니다. 해발 1,000~2,100m의 구름 숲에 서식합니다. 프랑스의 외제니 황후를 기리어 이름이 붙여진 이 강인한 새들은 꽃피는 나무 주변의 영역을 공격적으로 방어합니다. 잔존하는 안데스 숲에서 안정적인 개체군으로 관심 대상으로 등재되어 있습니다.
