The genus Compsonema comprises epiphytic and epilithic forms that typically grow as tiny, hair-like filaments on rocky substrates or on the surfaces of larger algae in intertidal and shallow subtidal zones. <em>Compsonema saxicola</em> has been recorded in Denmark and Portugal, suggesting a range spanning cool-temperate to warm-temperate eastern Atlantic coastlines of Europe, though its full distribution may be broader given the cryptic nature of microalgae.
