Common Predatory Bush-cricket

The Common Predatory Bush Cricket, <em>Saga pedo</em>, is a large, wingless insect in the order Orthoptera, family Tettigoniidae, and one of the largest orthopteran insects in Europe. It is a facultative parthenogen, with populations reproducing primarily through unfertilized eggs in many parts of its range. The species is typically found in warm, dry grasslands, scrublands, and steppe habitats with dense herbaceous vegetation, where it is an active predator of other insects and small invertebrates. Its geographic range spans parts of southern and eastern Europe, extending into western Asia, with records from Ukraine and fragmented populations reported as far as the United States in introduced or monitored populations. <em>Saga pedo</em> is a pale green to yellowish insect with long legs and antennae, adapted to ambush prey among vegetation. It is assessed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List due to habitat loss driven by agricultural intensification, urbanization, and the degradation of dry grassland ecosystems across its range. The species is also subject to collection pressure in some regions. Biological traits such as average lifespan, body size, and specific dietary preferences remain poorly documented for this species.
