세계에서 가장 크고 무거운 현생 조류인 타조(Struthio camelus)는 키 2.8m, 무게 156kg에 달하며 아프리카의 사바나와 반건조 평원에 서식한다. 날지 못하지만 강력한 긴 다리로 치명적인 발차기를 할 수 있고 시속 70km의 달리기 속도로 이를 보완한다. 거대한 눈은 어떤 육상 척추동물보다도 크다. 타조알은 현생 조류 중 가장 크다.
